Think Pink

The breast cancer site has a button that leads to a page of sponsor ads. You can click the button, and the revenue from the ads goes to pay for treatment for women in need.

I'm seriously considering doing the breast cancer 3-day walk. Have any of ya'll done it?

Thus ends today's public service announcements.

To answer your question:

My mom had a "radical" in 1981. The day she came out of the operating room was the exact day my daughter was born; Dec 2nd.

Although I've never done a "walk", I've twice done 5K runs for the pink ribbon, and I organized and ran a golf tournament for breast cancer in 1982 when I lived in Kansas. Raised $3,500.00. Not bad for a 2-day tournament in the middle of nowhere.

I haven't done the 3-day, either, but I've done the five-mile.

But whatever you do... thank you. My sis just finished her 27th radiation treatment after 6 months of chemo and a radical mastectomy.

Mac, whatever you decide to do, thank you. My Mom has had 2 lumpectomies and 1 radical mastectomy.

I've had the pre-thingie once.

I did do a walk, maybe should do it again.

Sounds like it to me, too. *grin* I guess I didn't understand how many lives were touched by breast cancer.

Thanks, folks. Yep, JM, find a walk and do it again. (Of course, I'm a huge believer in service to the community as a means of self-expression and empowerment.)

From Medicineworld.org

American Cancer society (ACS) estimates that a total of 211,240new cases of invasive breast cancer will occur in women in the United States during the year 2005. At this time there are over 2 million women living in the US who have been diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer. Breast cancer incidence continues to increase since 1980. A total of 40,410 women and 470 men are predicted to die from breast cancer in the United States during the year 2005 as per ACS estimates. The death rates from breast cancer among woman of all ages have declined in the United States by 2.8% every year from 1990 to 2000 as per the most recent data. By site breast cancer continues to be the leading cancer site among American women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women ages 40-59.

Breast Cancer incidence
Common Breast Cancer Myths

The first myth pertaining to this disease is that it only affects women.

Second myth that is associated with this disease is that if one has found a lump during an examination, it is cancer.

Third is that it is solely hereditary

The next myth associated with breast cancer is downright ridiculous. Would you believe, that in this day and age, some individuals still think that breast cancer is contagious?

Conversely, some individuals foolishly believe that breast size determines whether or not one gets cancer.

Finally, another myth that is associated with this disease is that it only affects older people. This is not so. Although the chance of getting breast cancer increases with age, women as young as 18 have been diagnosed with the disease.
