Changing tastes

When I was a kid, I loved fig newtons. Really, really loved 'em.

I had a fig newton tonight, and it was sort of bland. Just...there. Where on earth did that fig newton template in my memory go?

Ditto for pepperoni. Something bad is happening to my palate.

There seems to be an entire class of flavors that exists only in memory--they're now unattainable in any kind of physical reality.

That seem terribly sad.

You've quit smoking; try again in a couple of years.

Yes, it takes that long before your sense of tast and smell recover.

Lisa beat me to it - a combination of age and smoking can really numb the taste buds. I started to use more spices to zing up the taste of foods but now my digestion can't handle it - my body is just one big traitor...

Lisa and Dawno are right on target, Mac. I quit smoking 12 years ago and it messes w/ the taste buds big time. No need to start smoking again to prove the theory correct, however.

Be quiet about age, will ya!!

*sigh*

All right then. I suppose I shall just have to be patient.

I see Lisa has mentioned that your taste may be different due to you not smoking. That was my first thought. (Can I use this as an excuse not to quit?)

The more I think about it, though, Mac, I used to love a lot of different foods that I find quite bland lately, and I still smoke. What's my excuse?

Sounds like a great meme idea to me.

Gee, and no one said, 'They just don't make stuff like they used to.'

I've never liked fig newtons or pepperoni. I have a cousin who wouldn't eat anything BUT Hormel pepperoni when she was 10-11-12.

Fig newtons? Blech! Fruit newtons, especially strawberry and apple? I'm all over that! :)

Some of those nerve sensors have just quit firing. Same thing is going to happen to your sense of smell. When you get old, remember to bathe every day, whether you think you need it or not.

Bernaise sauce - coconut candies - vanilla Dr. Pepper - I used to love them, now - blah.

On the other hand, I can eat garlic in quantities guaranteed to to keep my neighborhood vampire free. It doesn't help keep away old people, though.

I'm with Unique on this one. Stuff isn't made the same anymore. They remove real ingredients like ammonium bicarbonate and substitute crap like tartrazine.
